


Amanda Gilligan is a consultant neurologist, educator, clinician and researcher who has dedicated over 30 years of her work to the areas of stroke medicine, Parkinson’s Disease and epilepsy. She is a dedicated teacher and clinician, whose love of learning and sincere commitment to nurturing talent and supporting the next generation of medical graduates has been fundamental to the journey of her career.
Professor Amanda Gilligan completed Year 12 at Loreto Toorak in 1981. She completed her undergraduate degrees at Monash University in 1989 which was followed by a PhD at the University of Melbourne in 2005, researching the area of stroke medicine. In 2022, she completed a business education degree through Monash Business School.
Amanda’s neurology training was completed at the Royal Melbourne and Austin Hospitals, and she became a specialist neurologist in 1998. Working as Deputy Director to the Department of Neurosciences at Eastern Health from 2007 and as Acting Director from 2012, she oversaw clinical care, teaching and research. She moved to Epworth Healthcare in 2016 and subsequently became the Director of the Neurosciences Clinical Institute for all Epworth Health, making it one of the largest Neurosciences services in Australia.
In all these leadership roles, Amanda has led teaching and research opportunities in a wide range of areas including TIA/stroke treatments, AI/machine learning projects in epilepsy, spinal surgery quality control, neurogenetics and advanced Parkinson’s treatments. She continues her teaching and mentoring role with nursing and medical students, junior medical staff, specialists and advanced trainees as well as PhD and B Med science students. Her clinical care and teaching skills in neurology mark her as one of Australia’s leading medical experts in this field, determined to make a substantial difference to her patients and healthcare more broadly.
